Les Vendanges du Savoir at La Cité du Vin, Bordeaux
La Cité du Vin invites you to a screening & encounter around science impacts in the world of wine.
First appearing in Anatolia and the Caucasus, vine cultivation gradually conquered the world. However, in the mid-19th century, diseases imported from America (phylloxera, powdery mildew, downy mildew and others) cut swathes through plantations. The science of the time managed to save western vineyards at the last minute, but as a payoff set itself up as an inescapable remedy, resulting in chemical treatments designed to guarantee yields at the expense of the environment. Today, however, the search for environmentally friendly alternatives has promoted a new alliance between the vines and science that respects locations and terroirs,
The documentary La Science et le vin - Un nouveau pacte (‘Science and wine – a new pact’) made by François-Xavier Vives being screened La Cité du Vin takes us to France, Germany, Switzerland and Italy on the hunt for researchers, oenologists and winemakers who are trying to renew millennia-old links between humans, vines and wine.
After the film screening, numerous specialists will discuss the question of responsible winegrowing. Where does science fit in wine production? Is science compatible with an era that advocates a return to nature? What are the main points of discussion for science and society in the world of wine?
