Create your own wine

The Graves Grand Cru Classé Château Pape Clément invites you to learn the secrets of the cellar masters. Its B-Winemaker workshop gives participants the opportunity to create their own wine from the estate’s varietal wines and go home with their personalised bottle.

Chateau Pape Clément, a jewel in the crown of Bordeaux wine

One of the oldest Bordeaux wines, Château Pape Clément is a walled-in urban vineyard, as is its neighbour the Château Haut-Brion, in the town of Pessac. Its first harvest dates back to the 13th century. Its owner, Bertrand de Goth, archbishop of Bordeaux, became pope under the name Clement V in 1305. Today this Grand Cru Classé de Graves and its 60 hectares of vines planted on a gravel-sand and limestone-clay soil, rich in ferrous minerals, of the appellation Pessac-Léognan, are among the jewels in the crown of Bordeaux wine.

Visitors invited to the blending boutique are entitled to a full tour of the property, from the rows of vines to the vat-house, led by the sommelier of the château, Pierre Gros. This erudite and amiable host will explain the cultivation and maturation techniques used to achieve the exceptional wines you will blend during the workshop.

Taste, spit, try another percentage... it's up to you !

In a panelled back room of the Château Pape Clément boutique in Pessac, a large table is set up for the blending ceremony. Placemats, wine glasses, test tubes, and the necessary conversion sheets await the visitors invited to enjoy a playful and convivial experience at the B-Winemaker workshop. Individuals or groups of twelve to sixty people can book this privilege, attended by one or more sommeliers who will carefully guide each guest s they discover the blending process of wines which gives Châteaux Pape Clément, Latour Carnet or Grands Chênes, a Cru Bourgeois of the Médoc (all properties of Bernard Magrez), their reputation.

The B-Winemaker workshop is open to everyone; it is all about taking pleasure in learning how to measure out the correct proportions of the varietal wines, which compose the Pope Clement or Grand Chênes wines.

Once seated in front of four glasses and two bottles each containing wine from a plot of Cabernet or Merlot, and the test tubes used by professionals, it’s up to you! The sommelier will guide you as you discover the alchemy usually reserved for the cellar masters. After tasting the wines and noting the characteristics of each grape variety, the fresher and livelier Merlot, and the Cabernet which adds complexity and depth, you are ready to create your own blend. 30% Cabernet, 70% Merlot? Taste, spit, try another percentage... Each participant makes a final choice based on his or her personal perception of the wine produced by the blend and there will be no shortage of opinions around the table.

Finally, when you have made your selection, the sommelier will help you put the cork and the cap on your bottle before printing your customised label. Leaves you feeling rather proud!
