La Cité du Vin : A signature building

Located next to the Garonne River at the gateway to the Bassins à Flot district, La Cité du Vin stands like a lighthouse in the very spot which served as the port and entry point to the city of Bordeaux for centuries. Already an iconic building, its golden cladding is inspired by the river and wine.

The architecture and scenography of La Cité du Vin are the fruit of a closepartnership between two companies: Parisian firm XTU Architects and English museum design experts Casson Mann.

A strong architectural statement, La Cité du Vin stands out with its bold curves and shape. Anouk Legendre and Nicolas Desmazières, the architects from XTU Architects, designed a space shaped by symbols of identity: shape of a vine stock, wine swirling in a glass, eddies on the Garonne. The architecture evokes the soul of wine and captures a fluid essence, ‘a seamless curve, intangible and sensual’.

The interior of the building is also impressive. It is designed by Casson Mann, known for their work at the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Imperial War Museum in London.

La Cité du Vin : A unique place offering multiple experiences

Across more than 3,000 m² and 19 different themed spaces, the permanent exhibition invites you to take a voyage of discovery and enjoy a unique experience exploring the many and varied facets of wine across time and space.

The permanent exhibition offers visitors great freedom. They can wander as they choose, according to their particular interests and the time they have available. Whether as an active participant at The Terroir Table or a spectator on The World Wine Tour, laid down for Bacchus and Venus or stood next to the e-vines, visitors alternate between individual, collective, educational, immersive, dreamlike and multisensory experiences. Each visitor is master of their own discovery path and designs their own visit.

35 metres up on the eighth floor, the belvedere is the culmination of a visit to La Cité du Vin and offers 360° views of the river, Bordeaux and the surrounding area. In this exceptional space, a monumental chandelier made of thousands of bottles and a 10-metre-long oak counter enhance the uniqueness of this location. Depending on their age, each visitor is offered the opportunity to taste either a glass of wine from among a regularly changing selection of twenty wine regions or a glass of grape juice.

Gems of La Cité du Vin’s cultural programme, two temporary exhibitions are put on per year in the hall of columns.

Every spring, a large temporary exhibition featuring various cultural and artistic themes is organized, inviting masterpieces from the most important international museums and private collections.

You can also travel to the heart of the world's wine-producing countries and regions through original exhibitions: every year a "guest vineyard" is invited during a summer at La Cité du Vin to present its richness and history.
