Harvest in Bourg and Blaye: Become a winegrower for the day!

At the end of September, along the wine routes of Bourg and Blaye, the vineyard comes to life for the picking of the grapes.

The harvest, consecration of a year’s work in the vineyard, is also a festive moment that some winegrowers have decided to share. From the vine to the glass, the secrets of making this precious nectar will be revealed.

A crucial but festive moment...

For some of us, the harvest reminds us of our first experience of work, often accompanied by meeting new friends. For professionals in the sector, this period represents more the culmination of long months spent pampering the vine. A few weeks that are strategic for the development of the future wine: the grape, the raw material, is harvested and then quickly put into tank. Though sensitive, this period is also conducive to celebration and some châteaux open their doors to allow the general public to become winegrowers for a day.

Become a winegrower for the day!

With nearly 7000 wine-producing properties, the Bordeaux vineyard offers some opportunities to observe the harvest, or even to take part in it. Introduction to the harvest and vineyard work, tastings, cellar visits and vineyard lunches are just some of the activities offered by the châteaux. A unique opportunity for the general public to take part in this event, which only happens once a year. Terms like “pressing”, “running off” and “pumping over” will become clear, and future tastings will take on new meaning.

Wine harvest in Bordeaux, Blaye et Bourg

Each year the Pays de la Haute-Gironde organises a day to introduce the winegrower’s craft. “A day that is essential if you want to understand what you have in your glass,” says Nelly, who came with her family to Château Monconseil-Gazin to take part in the harvest. Two dates are available in September, on which activities are organised around vineyard work and discovery of the Bordeaux vineyard.

On the programme: presentation of the territory, the appellation, the property and the winegrowers; taking part in the harvest (picking, carrying...); introduction to cellar work (pressing, crushing...); wine tasting...

With lunch in the château with the winegrower, this event has now become an unmissable feature of the Bourg and Blaye wine routes.
