Didier Gontier, director of the Maison des Vins de Bourg

Built out of the cliff-side, the extension to the Maison des Vins des Côtes de Bourg allows for discovery, buying and tasting all in one place, against the backdrop of the Dordogne.

New reception room, a second pontoon, is the appellation preparing for a strong increase in tourism?

DG: We are 1h30 from Bordeaux by boat, and we have noticed the enthusiasm that comes via the river. The new landing stage will allow us to welcome more boats. As for the extension of the Maison des vins, built to be entirely transparent, it has a wine bar opening onto the reception room, which offers 60 wines of the appellation, and a conference room. In the shop installed in the vaulted cellar, visitors can also take advantage of advice from the growers, to choose between our 170 wines.

Where have these modern ideas come from?

DG: Here you can find the contemporary spirit, but also the finesse and the delicacy of the young generation who are currently in the process of taking over the properties. There is a strong sense of renewal in this appellation. It is very warm. The growers who made the history of the Côtes de Bourg are now handing over. This rejuvenation gives a lot of momentum to the vineyard.

And to prolong the pleasure, what do you recommend?

DG: The cliff-side road, narrow and picturesque, allows for discovery of fishing villages and the famous fishermen’s cabins, in a landscape that blends river, stone and vine. It takes you up to Blaye, with its citadelle. It is also possible to rent electric bikes at the tourist office in Bourg, to visit the town and stop off in the châteaux.
